Boston Choral Ensemble Concert

On Friday Dec. 8 I got to see my friend Katherine Foley sing with the Boston Choral Ensemble. Their program was “An English Christmas” at the First Church in Cambridge UCC, a beautiful and acoustically rich venue. The traditional cross-shaped sanctuary was pristine, with impressively lofty ceilings, an arched themed architecture, and a sufficiently large area under the main dome where the ensemble performed. I really enjoyed the range of selections, from the 20th century processional round to 16th century “Kyrie,” from the Senegalese working song inspired “Magnificat” to a cacaphony of organ, voices and handbells in a modern arrangement of the traditional carol “Joy to the World.” Katherine’s friend Griff Gall directs the Back Bay Ringers who were featured at the concert. It was a hectic week, and I thought about trying to catch the Sunday concert instead, to be honest. I’m so glad I went; sitting still for 2 hours, seeing the musicians sing and ring with heartfelt energy, and feeling the harmonies wash over me was the perfect way to wrap up a work week and remind myself that it is the Christmas season, and there is a wealth of beauty and artistry to be enjoyed if I take the time to do so. Thanks to Katherine for inviting me to her concert!
